Screen Porch

Screen : Defined as a fixed or movable upright partition used to divide a room, give shelter from draughts, heat, or light, or to provide concealment or privacy. Eg: Sheetal looked through the screen for the full moon. She had not eaten all day.  Porch : Defined as an exterior appendage to a  building, forming a covered approach or vestibule to a doorway. – a verandah. Eg: The sun had cast its long shadow, oblivious Hari and Sita continued to sit chatting on the porch. The project was an additional dwelling to an existing home.  The family had grown out of their existing house. A 1976 house they had built. Now with grandchildren, they were looking at adding a home for their growing family.  Not only had the family grown the neighbourhood a busy area in Bangalore was slowly turning commercial. Fronted by beautiful trees and a pocket park they couldn’t live in joy. Their concern was for privacy, and for their grandchildren to experience the house like their daughter and son had. As architects we looked at creating that non-tangible experience. Screen+Porch. The architecture was about the creation of a Screen Porch. A space carved out from the existing Ground floor. The screen made of lazor cut MS on a metal frame work was articulated and detailed after a careful study of the view angles, to create privacy. The percentage of cut outs in each panel was defined and drawn. The porch was to capture as much space as possible. Combining the different functions and entries creating a larger multifunctional court detailed in 3 different varieties of local granite. A place for rest, family, drying chillies, a “tulsi katte “ and dancing in the rain
